After years of career with the oldest English newspaper in Korea, The Korea Times, she now contributes to media and non-media companies as freelance journalist, notably to the South China Morning Post, Hong Kong-based English newspaper, and Wallpaper*, London-based design magazine. She covers a range of lifestyle topics related to Korea based in Seoul.
Suh-young has extensive experience in the media industry spanning from print and online journalism to broadcasting.
During her career with the Times, she has worked at the city desk and culture desk as staff reporter and also founded and managed bi-weekly lifestyle magazine "W", a supplement published by the newspaper. She was the youngest team manager ever appointed by the paper.
A bulk of her journalist career was spent on writing about the cultural scene in Korea but her wide interest in business and innovation also led to coverage of startups and organizational culture - manifested by a year-long series on innovative work cultures in Korea published at the Times.
She also participated as local producer in a documentary filmed by Al Jazeera English in Korea, about the perception of North Korean food and culture by South Koreans.
Suh-young was one of the longest-serving regular guests at This Morning, a current affairs program at the local English radio station TBS eFM. On her weekly appearance, she covered current affairs and cultural news and was responsible for the travel segment.
Leveraging on her experience, she now takes on gigs at various local and international events as moderator.
Suh-young was one of Seoul's "citizen designers" appointed to help re-brand the city image for the Seoul Metropolitan Government. She also worked with affiliate organizations such as the Seoul Design Foundation and DDP to revamp their websites.
She is a graduate of "design thinking" from the Global Executive Master of Science (GEMS) in Strategic Design and Management at the Parsons School of Design - The New School and serves on the school's Alumni Council as Korea representative and the only Asian representative in the council. She will also lead a global studio week program to be held in Seoul as part of the school's executive learning program.
For undergraduate studies, she majored in international studies and minored in Korean law at the Ewha Womans University in Korea.
She is bilingual in Korean and English.
